Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My mother had a diseased kidney removed 6 months ago. Currently her BUN = 46 and her creatinine = 2.38. How does that relate for her? She is over the ranges but she is not the typical patient with 2 kidneys. Are their modified values for her condition? How concerning are these elevated values?
As you mentioned, both the BUN and the creatinine are elevated.
Because she has one kidney instead of two, these means that her body is relying on this one kidney to flush toxins.
There are no specific values for BUN and creatinine for one kidney vrs two, the values only indicate if the BUN/creatinine are normal or low or high.
These values are high for anyone.
With a solitary kidney , she needs to be careful to control any risk factors that can cause damage to her kidney. This means tight control of her blood pressure, blood sugar, eating a healthy diet, avoiding any medications that may damage the kidney.
I hope this helps
